Ms. Vazquez: Hey, Dominique, can I interview you for the website student corner?
Dominique: Me? You sure you mean me?
Ms. Vazquez: Yes, you. You are Dominique Paulino and I want to interview Dominique Paulino.
Dominique: Why?
Ms. Vazquez: Uh, because you’re a student here, because you’ve been here for 3 years, because you have made some significant growths, because we are proud of you, and because you’re awesome.
Dominique: Those are good reasons.
We both laughed. On the day of the interview she showed up eager and prepared.
1. Did you choose Sizer or did your parents? Why?
My aunt chose this school because she liked the idea of me being in a school where I would be supported, and not just academically. When I got here for a shadow day, Nadia was so friendly and she introduced me to everyone in all of her classes. Everyone was ‘open-armed’ and friendly. It’s great because I have opportunities to improve here. I was always counting on somebody and here I’ve learned that I can do it on my own.
2. What is your favorite subject and why?
Ok, so last year I took Biology and didn’t pass. So, this year I’m taking it again. I now have an EXP in that class. It is crazy and amazing. I understand everything and am eager to learn and challenge myself. I love biology. I have even decided that I want to be a surgeon because I love it so much. It feels like my calling. And, I didn’t pass it last year. Its crazy.
3. Who is your hero and why?
My hero is my aunt Maria because she has shown me that you really can accomplish anything if you believe in it. She’s such a strong person and taught me a lot about how I look at myself. She tells me that I’m beautiful and strong and not to let anyone tell me otherwise. She told me “You can come into this world with nothing and make something of yourself.” She appreciates everything and she shows it. I want to prove to her that I can do something good with my life. I want to make her proud.
4. Do you participate in any clubs, sports, etc?
I’m the Secretary of the Green Team. It’s a club of students who want to make our school a cleaner and greener school. It’s fun. It’s open to all grades and anyone can join! I’ve played soccer, softball and did wrestle with Monty Tech. I play sports to feel healthy. I also love the challenge.
5. Tell me more about wrestling.
Wresting…yes, I love wrestling. I stopped 2 years ago. I wrestled from ages 6-14. I wrestled guys. I like how powerful I feel when I wrestle. It made me feel like I was in charge. I am looking for more chances to wrestle. I miss it.
6. Is there anything you’d share with a student who is considering coming to Sizer School?
This school is a community-based school. The students and teachers talk to you and make you feel included. This school accommodates you as a student and will support you with whatever means necessary. If you do your part, they do theirs. Even if you don’t do your part, they still do. They encourage you to be better and to do better. The teachers are awesome and can help you one on one. It’s a great place and I’m so thankful that my aunt found it.
Me: Like I said, you’re awesome!
Her: Thanks Miss.
Me: Where do you want to take your picture?
Her: Biology room.
Me: Of course you do.
