I read Deliver Us from Normal about a year ago. I thought it was a very good book and was actually pretty sad when I finished it. The author, Kate Klise, has a very good way of describing what's going on in this fictional story. About halfway through the book you will find that it has two parts.

The book is about a boy who leads an irregular life style with his whole family in their town Normal. The boy grows up thinking that his family is definitely not normal. He figures that his life will never get any better and he wishes his life was not filled with embarrassment, tragedies, and change.

Just as life starts to look up for him and his family, something changes. His sister decides to run for class president in their middle school. That seems to get the family into a pickle. They wind up having to sell their house, move far away, start homeschool, and change their entire lifestyle. The journey the family goes through seems to bring them closer together in an odd, funny, and eye-catching read.

This book is in our library's collection. Next time you're there, check it out!

Interview With Ms. Campbell about after school activities.

After school clubs that will be offered here at NCCES include Write For Your Life, Scrapbooking, Magic:The Gathering, Random Art Experience, Sewing Club, Dance Club, Writing/Book Club, FATV, Math Club, Fencing and Yoga.

Here's a little inside scoop to each club:

Write For Your Life: Hosted by Ms. Moreau. With a teacher with past professional writing experience teaching the course, this club will offer a chance for you to get in touch with your intensive writing skills. This club will be hard work but it is worth the effort. It will be up to you what you want to write, anything is a possibility.

Scrapbooking: Hosted by Ms. Libny Vargas. This club is just as it says, all about scrapbooking. Get your creative skills going to create some pieces of work you can keep and remember. Tools and materials provided by Ms. Vargas.

Magic:The Gathering: Hosted by Ms. Reed. Ever heard of Magic:The Gathering? Well it doesn't even matter come to this club find out and learn, all needed info and skills will be taught to you. All those that do have experience and enjoy playing are definetly welcome as welll. You don't have to own your own deck, club will meet on Mondays in the commons (and it's possible that snacks might be there too).

Random Art Experience: Hosted by Ms. Adams. This club is an eccentric and eclectic art class. You will be able to bring out the Picasso in you while all the while creating fun art projects. Adults are welcome to come to the club.

Ms. Calcatarra encourages any clueless adults (like Ms. Campbell) to bring their sewing machines to a one day how-to workshop.

Dance Club: Hosted by one faculty member but student led by student O.J. This Dance Club offers freestyle and Hip-Hop dancing. O.J. also happens to be an accomplished dancer in both styles of dancing.

Writing and Book Club Hosted by Ms. Hamel and Ms. Whitfield. Members of this club will be journaling and using their creative writing skills. Also you will pick a book to read and go in depth with it through writing.

FATV Hosted by . This club has limited enrollment. Students with experience are welcome to return. FATV involves t.v. production in a laid back environment.

Math Team Hosted by Mr. Szekely. This club is for anyone interested in math. There might end up being competitions but good times are promised. So if math is your thing come and join Math Team Club.

Fencing Hosted by Mrs. Stewart . There are still openings to join this club. Fencing techniques are taught in this class for actual competition. March 2nd will be the fencing film festival fund raiser at NCCES.

Yoga This club offers a combination of strength, stretching and relaxing yoga techniques. This club will be a definite workout for mind and body.

I recently finished a book from the Fitchburg Public Library titled "What-The-Dickens", written by
Gregory Maguire. You may recognize that name; he also wrote "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister"
and "Wicked: Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West", which is now a hit Broadway musical.

"What-the-Dickens" is the story of a rogue tooth-fairy, but it is also the story of a family during
a storm. It sounds odd at first, but the story is very very interesting and well written. If you
enjoy 'fractured' fairy tales, this is a book for you!
